College student shoots mother goose

FAYETTEVILLE Sheriff's investigators say the Canadian goose made a nest in a parking lot median at Fayetteville Technical Community College.

On Friday morning, security guards saw the student take a BB Rifle out of his car and shoot the bird in the neck.

Even though the bird is bleeding from the wound, she refused to leave the nest. That's why sheriff's investigators say they can't rescue the injured bird.

"We can't rescue the bird, because she has eggs," Sheriff's Department Spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said. "There are four eggs in the nest. She is a protected species and because of that and the fact that she is a mother we can't take her away and endanger the eggs."

"She could possibly die, and if she does that means stronger charges against the suspect," Tanna added.

The suspect, 23-year-old Jeffrey Caquias faces animal cruelty and several other misdemeanor charges. Sheriff's investigators say he's also been banned from the Fayetteville Tech campus.
