Last week, the department launched a Facebook web page. Now, it's using the website www.nixle.com to send alerts to citizens wishing to get up to the minute information via e-mail and text message.
Police said there's no charge for the service. Typically, messages cover different categories including traffic, community, advisory and urgent alert messages.
The department encouraged citizens to sign up - particularly members of community watch groups or those hoping to provide information to law enforcement agencies that will help solve cases, find missing persons or learn ways to reduce crime within the community.
