Smokers visiting Wrightsville Beach can breathe a sigh of relief.

The town's board of alderman voted three to two Thursday night against a smoking ban on the beach.

If it had passed, Wrightsville Beach would have been the first beach in North Carolina to adopt that policy.

Two years ago, the board of aldermen also rejected the ban, partially out of concern about how to enforce it.
