Development explosion continues in popular Brier Creek
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The popular Brier Creek neighborhood in Raleigh is about to become even more popular with the development of more than 12 acres of land. Construction for a mixed-use shopping center, apartment housing, single-family homes, an outpatient medical facility, and even a grocery store is evident along Glenwood Avenue between Brier Creek Parkway and TW Alexander Drive. Several developers are in the early stages of laying the groundwork for this specific area.
Brier Creek resident Steve Slocum lives near the construction and is used to it.
"I think it's going to be a good thing. This area is growing like crazy," he told ABC11. According to WalletHub, Raleigh ranks third as the best large city in the country to live in.
It's one of the reasons why Bronx-transplant Debbie Doino moved to Brier Creek.
"Personally, I like all this. I think it shows life. It shows people are around. And I like that feeling," she said. "I mean some people, you know what? The people that are probably from the area, they're probably not going to be happy about it because it's a big change."
Doino, who is a stand-up comedian, is appreciative of the change in scenery and plans to stay here "until death do us part" -- provided the area keeps its charm.
"If they put in a huge building like it was back in the Bronx. Then I would probably say no I don't want to do this," she said. "I like it more country. I like the office buildings. Everything is low. Everything is peaceful. Everything's nice."
Among the construction plans is a senior-living center -- Cambridge Village at Brier Creek. According to the developer's website, the project is slated to be completed next year.
According to construction workers, a Harris Teeter grocery store is scheduled to be built at the corner of TW Alexander and Glenwood Avenue. ABC11 reached out to Harris Teeter for comment, and received the following statement:
Harris Teeter has signed a lease for a future location at this intersection. I do not have further details at this time.
The Brier Creek area already hosts a Food Lion, Lowe's Foods, Super WalMart, Target Greatland, and Earth Fare grocery store.
Durham resident Theresa Prince, a chef, frequents Brier Creek often. She feels the area is already congested and the new construction will not help. However, that is the least of her worries.
"Business is always booming. People are moving here every day. So I think it's going to be a good thing," she said.
ABC11 reached out to the City of Raleigh for census figures in the affected ZIP codes, but our attempts for those numbers were unsuccessful.
