Sanford man charged with felony child abuse in death of 3-year-old boy

SANFORD, NC (WTVD) -- Michael Anthony Amatucci, 28, is facing charges of felony child abuse in the death of a 3-year-old boy.

Authorities responded to a call of an unresponsive child in the 100 block of Gordon Street on Thursday. Amatucci was the child's caregiver at the time.

The boy was immediately taken to Central Carolina Hospital. Further investigation showed he had injuries to his head and body. He was later airlifted to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital. Officials say the boy died on Monday.

Amatucci was charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury. He was taken to the Lee County Jail under a $100,000 bond. Police say additional charges are pending.
