SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Highway Patrol has filed charges after a man was killed in a crash along U.S. Highway 15/501 close to the Lee County/Chatham County line Wednesday morning.

The area is north of Sanford.

Troopers said around 9:30 a.m., William Smith Jr., 72, of Sanford was stopped in the northbound lane because of bridge construction ahead.

The Highway Patrol said John Ussery, 73, of Southern Pines, was also traveling north and failed to stop - hitting the back of Smith's car - pushing it into an SUV.

Smith died. Ussery was not hurt. Three other people were injured.

Ussery is charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
