JONESVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities in Wilkes County say the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of a sheriff's deputy Monday morning, died in a shootout with law enforcement.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. near the town of Jonesville, just west of Greensboro, when deputies were responding to a domestic dispute.

Officials said 60-year-old James Monroe Barrett fired at the deputies, injuring at least one.

The wounded officer, Sgt. Steven Russell, was airlifted to a regional hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Barrett, who authorities also believed set fire to a house before fleeing into a nearby wooded area, was later involved in a shootout with law enforcement in Ronda.

He was taken into custody after being shot, but later died at the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
