North Carolina and Raleigh agree on Dix hospital property deal

RALEIGH -- An agreement under which North Carolina will sell land to Raleigh for a large park could be finalized early next month.

Gov. Pat McCrory said Tuesday that final contract details for the state to sell the old Dorothea Dix mental hospital property are being worked out.

He told the Council of State the goal is to have the contract ready for approval by the council's May 5 meeting.

McCrory and Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane announced in January that the city would buy more than 300 acres near downtown for $52 million. Some land where state employees still work would be leased back to the state for as long as 25 years.

Senate Republicans have filed a bill to block the deal. That measure hasn't yet been heard.
