Public hearing held on proposed changes to DMV license renewal process
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The N.C. Department of Transportation is looking for your feedback on proposed rule changes that would allow experienced state drivers to skip several examinations during an online license renewal process.
"DMV is trying to find every opportunity to bring DMV to the customer," said N.C. Department of Motor Vehicle Commissioner Kelly Thomas.
During a public hearing Tuesday evening, Thomas laid out a summary of proposed changes to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles North Carolina Administrative Code. The changes would:
- Allow for the remote renewal of a driver's license, provided that the applicant is a resident of North Carolina and their name hasn't changed.
- Remove the written test for remote renewals
- Remove the road sign test requirement for remote renewals
- Remove the road test requirement for remote renewals
- Remove the photo requirement for remote renewals, provided that the applicant has an existing DMV photo on file.
"This online renewal system is much like your personal online banking system. You would set up your own personal security log-in unique to your experience," explained Thomas.
Thomas estimates the system with the rule changes would save the state money and time, since DMV officials predict this year could bring 1.4 million license renewal requests, which is why the North Carolina House passed the bill last summer.
Reaction to the proposed changes is mixed.
"I think it's a great idea because how about people who don't have the convenience to come out to the driver's DMV," said Ryan Lee of Raleigh.
Spencer Jenkins of Raleigh said he thought the idea could put other drivers at risk.
"I think that's crazy," Jenkins said, "because there are a lot of people out here. First of all, they need to have the road test. They need to have an eye test. They need to have a sign test."
