Triangle doctor dies in Caribbean
ST. LUCIA (WTVD) -- The local medical community is mourning the sudden loss of a promising young doctor.
Dr. Samyka Harris-Edwin, 31, died suddenly over the weekend while vacationing in the Caribbean with her husband.
Harris-Edwin lived in Raleigh and commuted to work every day in Fayetteville where she was a doctor at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Harris-Edwin and her husband, Micah Edwin, who is also a doctor, were on vacation in St. Lucia, where Micah is from.
The couple was climbing the Gros Piton mountain range on Sunday when Samyka reportedly began having trouble breathing and never regained consciousness.
Her husband administered CPR, but Samyka was pronounced dead not long after at a local hospital.
Samyka had spent the last year-and-a-half practicing medicine at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
ABC11 spoke to a supervisor Tuesday who said she was one of the most well-liked physicians on staff -- friendly and charismatic.
Administrators broke the news to staffers at Cape fear. Tuesday afternoon.
An autopsy showed Harris-Edwin died of heat stroke.
