Teen assaulted and carjacked
It happened in the 600 block of West Morgan Street

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham police say just before 5 p.m. Wednesday a 16-year-old girl was getting into her car in the 600 block of West Morgan Street when a man came up and punched her. The teen was knocked to the ground and the man then took off with her car. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

During his speedy getaway, Durham police say he hit several other cars, including an ABC11 news vehicle driven by our own Stephanie Lopez, a reporter at our station.

Lopez said she was on Ramseur Street approaching Corcoran Street when the car came along.

"The car actually cut us off, went in front of us, we were slowing down for a light at an intersection, so he cut us off went in front of us, like two other lanes, crossed train tracks after that and kept speeding away," said Lopez.

She described the vehicle as a red Honda Civic, and Durham police confirm it was a red Honda Civic with Georgia plates. They also say that stolen car hit at 13 vehicles, two bicyclists and pedestrians.

Police describe the suspect as a black man, with a light complexion, 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall with a muscular build. He was wearing a tan jacket and combat boots.
