RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Officials broke ground on a new stadium for Athens Drive High School Wednesday morning.
The new facility will serve football, soccer, and lacrosse teams. The project also includes additional parking and repairs at the existing stadium.
Boosters say the new facility is welcome and needed after enduring the old for years.
"It's outdated," said parent Jill Tate. "I'm a nurse so I have safety concerns. It's been manageable, but it needs some improvements."
While the new stadium is sited closer to the school building, plans call for continued use of the older stadium as a practice facility as well as an arena for track and field.
There'll be 3,000 seats inside the new stadium.
The total budget is almost $6 million and should open by fall 2016.
