Fayetteville police investigating man's death after he was found unconscious in car

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Fayetteville police are investigating a man's death after he was found unconscious in car Thursday night.

The incident started when officers were called to the Value Place Hotel in the 700 block of W. Rowan Street after someone spotted an unconscious man in the back of a gray 2004 Chevrolet Malibu.

When officers arrived, the vehicle left the parking lot. Authorities searched the area and spotted the car in the rear parking lot of Highsmith Rainey Express Care on Robeson Street.

Police said a man was seen walking away from the vehicle shortly after parking it, but fled the scene by the time officers arrived.

A man in the backseat of the Malibu, was declared dead at the scene. He was later identified as 23-year-old Christopher Pope of Dunn.

His body is being sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh to determine his cause of death.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Homicide Squad are investigating the incident. Further details surrounding the incident have not been released.
