RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC (WTVD) -- The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina joined with 14 Triangle-area companies to feed those living with hunger in a September 11 day of service Thursday.

More than 1,000 RTP professionals ditched the office to unite for the third annual Sort-A-Rama.

They easily beat their 150,000 meals goal by packaging 176,000 meals for families at risk of hunger.

The event, "Sort-A-Rama," is the Food Bank's largest one-day volunteer project and serves to highlight Hunger Action Month, a national initiative for food banks around the country for advocacy, awareness and engagement. Sort-A-Rama is also held in recognition of 9/11 and the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Governor Pat McCrory, along with executives from BASF, BCBSNC, Cisco and Food Lion issued the first "ceremonial" scoops.

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina helps feed people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. They've been doing it for more than 30 years. Learn more at http://www.foodbankcenc.org/.
