Hundreds attend funeral for Holly Springs runner
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Hundreds of people gathered in Apex for the funeral of a father of four who was hit while jogging.
Derek Davis died Monday, a week after being struck in Holly Springs. His funeral happened Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The funeral symbolizes the end for some who may have come to this Mormon church to say goodbye to Davis, who was a church leader.
For his wife Amanda, this is the beginning of a long journey.
"I think there's been a lot of shock," said family friend Tim Germann. "She's been trying to make arrangements but also care of her four children."
Last night, hundreds gathered to run in honor of Davis, leaving shoes where he was hit.
"Many in that memorial run did not know Derek, but knew him and his reputation for being a very happy and fun-loving person," Germann explained.
For friends and family, Friday was a day for support.
"Today will be a celebration. But also very difficult and I think as time goes on, it will set in how difficult their circumstances may be," Germann said.
Members of the church said they have no ill will toward the 18-year-old who hit Davis.
"I think it's difficult for a church who bears the name of Jesus Christ to do anything other than to teach its members forgiveness," Germann said. "And I think there's been a lot of that in this last week and there will need to be more of that as time goes on."
