Tips to consider before joining a gym in the new year
Local gyms including the downtown Durham YMCA were packed with people starting the New Year off right.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Local gyms including the downtown Durham YMCA were packed with people starting the New Year off right.

YMCA member Kathy Webb made sure she got her New Year's Day workout in. She says she's been on a mission for the last couple of years towards a healthier lifestyle and 2015 is no different.

"I'm just trying to get a fresh start, not trying to put it off," Webb said.

Member Emily Braley had the same idea as she burned lots of calories in a special New Year's Day 90 minutes cycle class at the YMCA.

"It's an awesome way to start the day and especially the new year," added Braley.

If joining a gym is part of your New Year's resolutions, take these simple steps before signing up.

First, see if the gym will let you try it out for a day or week to make sure it fits your needs. If you have to sign a contract, take a look at how long it is. Also look to see what the penalty is if you cancel early.

If you do have to cancel your contract, check to see exactly what steps you have to take. Check to see if there's an auto renewal clause. Typically gym memberships auto renew.

Lastly, once you sign the contract, make sure you get a copy of it for your records.
