Henderson road is so muddy, school bus won't drive it
HENDERSON (WTVD) -- Residents living along Regina Lane in Henderson are upset after having to deal with a muddy road. The recent rainfall in Vance County led to unsafe driving conditions. Regina Lane is unpaved and residents told ABC11 that every time it rains or snows, driving along Regina Lane is hazardous.
Kierra Wyatt's son is in kindergarten at nearby New Hope Elementary. She shared a voicemail with ABC11 from the school's principal, Dr. Harold Thompson, notifying parents the school bus would no longer be driving on Regina Lane because of the road conditions. The school bus would instead pick students up on nearby Thomas Road - which is paved.
ABC11 spoke with Dr. Thompson on Thursday afternoon. He told us he sent the voicemail out to parents, but the decision to pick up and drop off students on Thomas Road was made by Vance County's bus garage. The decision was made out of "safety for the students."
Parents are concerned.
"I don't feel comfortable with doing that," Wyatt said. "By the time (my son) gets down from that long path, he's going to be full of mud. And I don't think that that's going to be safe and somebody should do something about it."
Katrina Moore also takes Regina Lane to get to her home. "The conditions of the road have just been horrible," she told ABC11. "...It's just, it's unpredictable. You don't know whether you're going to be able to get in or get out. It's just been that bad down here in this area."
ABC11 reached out to Vance County DOT on Thursday afternoon and was told the road would be scraped, however, paving of the road would be the responsibility of the owner of Regina Lane - as it is a private road.
DOT confirmed their workers were in the area earlier this week scraping the road to make it safer. However, residents said they feel DOT actually made matters worse.
