Commission to vote on Confederate sign in Hillsborough
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Historic District Commission in Hillsborough may vote on removing the words "Confederate Memorial" from above its museum, but not until an application to change the wording has been filed.
The town board already voted in favor of removing those words from the Orange County Historical Museum.
The sign is an historic relic of the building's one-time use as a public library. It was funded by the Daughters of the Confederacy back in the 1930s. Some natives have shown up at town meetings, fighting to preserve this piece of history.
Museum directors argue the sign is confusing, since the building is not a memorial to the Confederacy.
