ROUGEMONT, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two horses that had gotten loose were struck and killed on Highway 501 near Rougemont early Sunday morning.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 4:45 a.m. on Hwy 501 at Bacon Road.
Troopers said the horses had gotten loose and were in the roadway. A motorist spotted the horses and stopped on the side of the road.
Trooper said another driver was paying attention to the stopped car and didn't see the horses in the road. That driver, identified as Hallie Gentry, collided with the horses.
Both horses were killed. Gentry was taken to Duke Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"With this busy area, with all these houses, there should be some street lights out here," said commuter Carla Jordan.
Troopers said no charges will be filed.
It is not yet known where the horses came from.
