RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation is slated to talk to local officials today about the Interstate 540 on-ramp signal light project.
A signal light would have vehicles on the ramp stop at a red light before merging onto the interstate. Those vehicles would not be able to merge until there is a green light. Only one or two vehicles would be able to merge at a time, which meters vehicles merging onto the freeway.
According to the NCDOT's website, one of the benefits is smoother merges, which can help prevent crashes. The other benefit, according to the website, is smoother traffic flow to manage freeway congestion.
The signal lights would be installed at four on-ramps on westbound I-540 in North Raleigh with construction expected to begin in December.
They wwould be installed at the following locations:
Exit 14 at Falls of Neuse Road
Exit 11at Six Forks Road
Exit 9 at Creedmoor Road
Exit 7 at Leesville Road
The DOT is set to explain the project's benefits and answer questions at 2 p.m. at the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce on South Salisbury Street in Raleigh.
