RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Former John Edwards aide Andrew Young is facing several charges following an incident late Sunday night.

According to court documents, the 48-year-old Chapel Hill resident was pulled over by a Raleigh police officer in the 3000 block of Rock Quarry Road around 11:45 p.m. following a reported road rage incident. Police said the incident started when Young punched another car after he claimed to have been cut off in traffic while leaving a Luke Bryan concert.

Warrants indicated that Young had his 13-year-old child in the vehicle with him and admitted to drinking four beers while at the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre concert.

Officials said Young had red, glassy eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet, but refused a breathalyzer test. An officer reported Young had a "horrible" performance on a field sobriety test, and that Young was "rude" and "cocky."

A CCBI agent tried to get him to take another breathalyzer test at the Wake County Detention Center and noted that Young said, "I don't want to call a witness or an attorney. I'm not blowing." The agent said he told Young, "I'm asking you for a sample."

He claims Young replied by saying, "Asked and answered," which is a common phrase used when referring to testimony in a trial.

Young is facing misdemeanor child abuse and driving while impaired charges. He was released from jail on a $2,000 bond.

The now self-employed consultant -- according to arrest warrants -- was a key staff member in Edwards' 2008 presidential campaign.

The once loyal aide, who later wrote a tell-all book, falsely claimed paternity of Edwards' baby with then-mistress Rielle Hunter and helped hide her from the media for nearly a year.

In 2012 during former Senator Edwards' campaign corruption trial, Young turned against his former boss and testified for the prosecution under an immunity agreement. Edwards was acquitted of all charges.

Young's wife Cheri testified during the trial that Andrew Young "drank a lot in 2006 and 2007" as Edwards attempted to keep Hunter a secret.

According to court documents, Young was charged with DWI in 2006.

Cheri and Andrew Young have three children together.
