WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- A bad crash caused a major traffic headache for rush hour travelers on I-40 Eastbound near Jones Sausage Road on Thursday night.

Our crew on the scene said a construction truck lost a ladder. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol saw the truck lose its ladder and reportedly pulled the truck over.

Troopers went back to retrieve the ladder, but before they could, there was a chain reaction collision. Our crew on the scene said the first car to drive up on the ladder slammed on its brakes, causing the multi-vehicle accident.

Authorities said four people were injured. One person was transported to Duke Hospital, two were taken to WakeMed in Garner, and one was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

SHP has not said if any charges will be filed.
