1 dead after shooting, stabbing at Sampson County country club
Police said it was rented out for a private party

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Sheriff's deputies said one of the victims of an early morning shooting at Lakewood Country Club in Salemburg has died as a result of his injuries.

The shooting call came in around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies said. Responding deputies saw several groups fighting when they arrived at the country club.

Sunday afternoon, deputies confirmed one of the gunshot victims died from his injuries. He was identified as Anthony King, of Roseboro.

Authorities said an additional two people were shot, one person was stabbed, and two people were beaten.

A spokesperson with the Sampson County Sheriff's Office said King was supposed to be airlifted to WakeMed with serious injuries, however due to his condition the airlift was cancelled. He was taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center for emergency surgery. He was transferred to WakeMed where he died shortly after noon Sunday.

Star Royal, of Roseboro was identified as one of the physical assault victims and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with severe head trauma.

Mary Denise Rich, of Huntington, NY was treated at Sampson Regional for a minor stab wound and a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Daniel Cleveland Cooper, of Salemburg was also treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

An additional stabbing victim and a physical assault victim were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment, but their names are being withheld pending verification.

One deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated at Sampson Regional for a cut to the arm. Another deputy's vehicle was struck by people trying to leave the scene, but that deputy was not hurt.

Authorities told ABC11 the country club had been rented out for a private party. No arrests have been made.
