Host N.C. State gets past South Carolina 6-4 and into the Raleigh Regional championship

Eli Serrano III and Garrett Pennington combined for five runs, five hits, and three home runs to lead host North Carolina State past South Carolina 6-4 on Saturday night to advance to the championship game of the Raleigh Regional.

N.C. State (35-20), the No. 10 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, will play the James Madison-South Carolina winner in the regional championship on Sunday.

Serrano finished 3 for 5. Pennington hit two early home runs and later walked twice.

Serrano's solo homer gave the Wolfpack a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Dylan Brewer, who hit a solo home run in the fifth, answered for the Gamecocks with a two-run home run in the seventh that tied it 4-4.

Serrano singled and eventually scored in the seventh. Matt Heavner led off the eighth for the Wolfpack with a bunt single and advanced to second on Serrano's ground out. Pennington was intentionally walked, and Heavner scored on a throwing error by catcher Dalton Reeves to end the scoring.

The Wolfpack's Derrick Smith gave up one hit while striking out four in 1 2/3 innings for his sixth save.

Connor McCreery pitched just 1/3 inning in the seventh for South Carolina (37-24), but gave up one run for the loss.

Tar Heels are on verge of super regional after 6-2 win over LSU

Vance Honeycutt hit two long home runs and North Carolina advanced to the championship round of the Chapel Hill Regional, defeating LSU 6-2 on Saturday night.

After 4 1/2 scoreless innings, North Carolina broke through in the bottom of the fifth with Honeycutt's three-run shot deep to left field.

LSU, the defending national champion, fought back by drawing back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the seventh inning. Honeycutt answered in the bottom of the seventh, hitting a solo shot that was also deep to left field. It was his 61st career home run.

The Tar Heels added two in the eighth on a single by Gavin Gallaher and a groundout by Alex Madera.

LSU (41-22) will play an elimination game against Wofford on Sunday and North Carolina (44-13) will play the winner later in the day. If the Tar Heels were to lose, a final game would be played on Monday to decide the championship and which team will head to a super regional.

North Carolina's Shea Sprague got the start and was taken out after one out in the fifth inning. He allowed no runs on four hits. Ben Peterson (2-2) pitched two innings and got the win although he was charged with both of LSU's runs. Dalton Pence pitched 2 2/3 for his seventh save.

LSU's Luke Holman (9-3) took the loss after allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out 11.

Nowak's bases loaded hit in bottom of the 9th sends East Carolina past Wake Forest

Luke Nowak's bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the ninth delivered the game-winner and East Carolina beat Wake Forest with an improbable 7-6 win in the Greenville Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Wake Forest - once a preseason No. 1-ranked squad - saw its season come to an end. East Carolina (44-16) will face Saturday's loser between Evansville and VCU on Sunday.

The Pirates led 4-1 through eight innings but their season was on life support when five relievers surrendered five runs in the ninth. The bullpen's effort was in stark contrast to the 7 1/3 innings pitched by starter Trey Yesavage who struck out six and surrendered just one hit.

Facing a 6-4 deficit, the Pirates turned the script, sending eight batters to the plate to generate three runs for the win. After RBI singles by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and Dixon Williams, Nowak singled through the right side to score Williams with the winning run.

Williams batted 3 for 4 with a home run, scored twice, and drove in four runs for the Pirates.

The Demon Deacons' (38-22) Marek Houston went 1 for 3 and drove in a run and Nick Kurtz went 1 for 4 and drove in a pair.
