CHAPEL HILL, NC (WTVD) -- A large sinkhole has closed Lystra Road in Chatham County south of Chapel Hill.

A couple of vehicles apparently hit the hole soon after it opened and suffered damage. A wrecker truck was on scene taking a Volkswagen Beetle away.

It wasn't clear if recent flooding, which has pushed the water level at Jordan Lake to heights not seen in years, was to blame.

Lystra Road is popular with Triangle-area cyclists who refer to it as "Col de Lystra" because it has one of the steepest/longest hills in the region.
