SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A criminal complaint filed in federal court says a Sanford husband charged in the deaths of his wife and stepdaughter may have fled north and shows new details about the alleged killings.
The bodies of Calandra McLean and her 13-year-old daughter TaShonna were found by firefighters Monday afternoon in an apartment in the 900 block of Clark Circle after a resident called 911 to report she smelled a strong odor of gasoline.
According to the criminal complaint, the apartment suffered smoke and minor fire damage. Calandra's body was found bound with duct tape and the child's body was found in a bathtub. There was no sign either had been shot.
The complaint says Billy Jo McLean, 54, is believed to have kidnapped Calandra's 17-year-old son Tobias. He was last seen driving a 2001 Ford Windstar van. The complaint says the boy needs medication which he does not have.
Billy Jo McLean is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
The complaint says he was seen purchasing gasoline at a store with a credit card before the fire and was seen going into the apartment with a gas can and coming out without it.
The complaint says McLean is believed to have fled to the northern Virginia, Washington D.C, and Maryland areas based on phone records.
