National Pet Day is April 11 - it's a day to help bring awareness to pets who are still in need of a forever home.

Not to be confused with National Love Your Pet Day, which is Feb. 20 - the holiday encourages people to celebrate by rescuing an animal, volunteering at a shelter or donating to one.

Some shelters are offering discounted adoptions rates for National Pet Day. You can find a shelter near you here, and find out whether it has any fees.

ABC11 went to an animal shelter in Durham to find out it thinks you should adopt.

Shanfonda Davis, executive director of the Animal Protection Society of Durham at the Durham County Animal Shelter said people who choose to adopt their pets save lives.

Here are some of the animals you might adopt on National Pet Day.

These cats and dogs at the Wake County Animal Center are currently under foster care, and still in need of a forever home.
