FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A teen is in custody following a high-speed chase through downtown Fayetteville on Thursday afternoon.
Cumberland County authorities confirm the boy is 14 years old and was driving his grandmother's car. This afternoon was the third time he'd stolen her car, they said.
The chase began about 4 p.m., with a traffic stop on Legion Road. The teen took off and an ABC11 news crew witnessed him speed down Gillespie Street with a handful of deputies in pursuit. The teen driver clipped several cars during the chase before one of his tires blew out in front of City Hall on Hay Street.
The teen jumped out of the car and ran a block away into the Public Library on Maiden Lane, where he was arrested.
"We heard this loud racket in the vestibule of the library," said eyewitness Mitchell Shird. "We looked around and there was several police officers that slung this young kid down to the ground and they had him down wrestling with him and they put the cuffs on him."
By 5 p.m., the teen's car was towed, but deputies continued to interview several drivers on Hay Street who had been hit during the chase. No serious injuries were reported.
