Rabies case confirmed in Orange County
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- This year's second case of rabies in Orange County was confirmed on Monday.
The case originated on Thursday, when a Chapel Hill resident was walking his two leashed dogs on a trail in Carolina North Forest. The dogs lunged at a raccoon and one of the dogs sustained injuries.
The dog owner immediately called 911 and with his assistance, the responding Animal Control Officer found and removed the raccoon for testing.
Fortunately, both dogs involved were currently vaccinated against rabies and they have already received their booster shots pursuant to North Carolina's rabies laws.
All pet owners are urged to check the vaccination status of their pets. Pets that are due for a booster should be taken to a local veterinarian.
The first sign of rabies in an animal is a change in behavior. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, seek medical attention and call animal control.
