Raleigh, family of Darryl Williams reach nearly $1M settlement

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- January 2026 will mark three years since Darryl Williams died in Raleigh Police custody. Now, the City of Raleigh has reached an agreement to settle a federal lawsuit with Williams' estate.

The City will pay nearly a million dollars following the incident that played out on body cam video.

In 2023, officers approached Williams in a parked vehicle outside a business on Rock Quarry Road, and police say they suspected Williams was in possession of illegal drugs.

Police say officers found a folded-up dollar bill with white substance and when officers tried to take him into custody, police say Williams took off running.

Officers deployed their stun guns and restrained Williams, as he explained he had a health condition.

During the altercation, Williams slipped into unconsciousness.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The five officers involved were not criminally charged.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said he officers' use of force was warranted and legal.

Prominent Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump has said the lawsuit was a last resort for justice.

ABC11 reached out to the City for comment. A spokesperson said the City is not commenting on the settlement.

Williams' family also is not speaking about the agreement.

The Raleigh City Council still needs to sign off on the settlement.

Part of the $975,000 settlement would be paid by the city and the other part by the city's insurance.
