DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Power has been restored after more than 1,100 Duke Energy customers in Durham lost service Saturday during dangerously hot conditions.

The outage was first reported around 11:08 a.m. near East Geer Street and Midland Terrace. At its peak, 1,143 customers were without electricity.

Duke Energy listed the cause of the outage as "equipment going offline." Crews worked throughout the afternoon to restore service.

The outage came as temperatures climbed into the upper 90s, with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees in parts of the Triangle.

Although power has been restored, cooling centers remain available across Durham for residents seeking relief from the heat.

All Durham County libraries, except Bragtown Branch Library, are serving as cooling centers during their regular operating hours.

Additionally, Durham County and Communities in Partnership have opened a cooling center at 101 S. Driver St., operating from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
