Lee County woman charged after newborn found in trash can

SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Lee County woman is facing charges after a newborn was found in a trash can.

Lee County deputies responded on Sept. 13 after getting a 911 call from the Broadway area reporting a woman was lying in a yard.

Deputies arrived and found the woman and an infant inside a nearby trash can. They immediately began rendering lifesaving aid to both the woman and the newborn until emergency medical personnel arrived, the sheriff's office said Thursday.

Both the woman and the newborn were taken to a hospital.

Investigators confirmed that the woman was the child's mother.

The woman, Mishayla Elisabeth Iles, 29, of Sanford, NC, was released from medical care on Wednesday and was then arrested and charged with concealment of birth and attempted murder.

Iles is being held at the Lee County Jail without bond.

Sheriff Brian Estes commended the "swift actions and lifesaving measures of the deputies and first responders involved."

As of Thursday, the infant remained hospitalized but was said to be stable.
