Thousands without power in Wake County caused by damaged lines, Duke Energy investigating
WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- As Central North Carolina deals with record temperatures and Dangerous heat, thousands in Wake County find themselves without electricity.
According to Duke Energy, the outage happened around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, and around 35,000 customers were affected.
A tree fell on a power line while trees were being trimmed. The pilot and the aircraft were not harmed. It is unknown who the company was trimming trees for. Duke Energy is continuing to investigate the cause.
As of 4:23 p.m., fewer than 5,000 are without power in Wake County.
Power outages in Cary are affecting operations at several Town of Cary facilities, resulting in closures and modified operations.
Several Town of Cary facilities and programs are closed or canceled Thursday evening due to power outages.
At Downtown Cary Park, the 7 p.m. Zumba class has been canceled, and Guest Services is closed.
The Cary Senior Center, Herbert C. Young Community Center, Bond Park Community Center and Page-Walker Arts & History Center are closed, and all evening programs at those facilities have been canceled. The Bond Park Boathouse is also closed.
At the Cary Arts Center, all evening classes, open studios and rentals have been canceled. The building will close at 5 p.m.
A decision on the 7 p.m. movie at The Cary Theater will be made at 5:30 p.m. Ticket holders have been notified.
Drivers are urged to use caution while traveling in Cary.
