Increased toll rates in NC begin Thursday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The toll rate for the Triangle Expressway and Monroe Expressway is going up starting Thursday.

Drivers can pay in two ways, either with a prepaid NC Quick Pass or receive an invoice in the mail. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said an NC Quick Pass account saves drivers 50% on tolls in NC and pays tolls in 19 states.

Those with a NC Quick Pass in a traditional 2-axle vehicle should expect:

  • An increase of $0.12 from $4.05 to $4.17 if traveling the 18 miles of the original Triangle Expressway from N.C. 55 to I-40 in Durham.
  • An increase of $0.14 cents from $4.19 to $4.33 if traveling the 18 miles of the new extension of the Triangle Expressway from N.C. 55 to I-40 in Garner.
  • An increase of $0.04 cents from $2.92 to $2.96 if traveling a full trip on the Monroe Expressway.

There are also other ways to save on tolls, including signing up for a NC Only account and purchasing a Transponder on the Go.

According to NCDOT, revenue from tolls are used to pay off bonds sold to fund construction, as well as support operations and maintenance of each toll facility.
