Thousands flock to NCCU homecoming with new safety measures in place

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Thousands flocked to North Carolina Central University on Saturday for homecoming as the university implemented some security changes ahead of this year's celebrations.

The Eagles' 35-26 loss to Delaware State did not dampen the energy and excitement for homecoming, which many current and former students refer to as a family reunion.

"Homecoming means the greatest four years of your life that we are able to reflect on (with) friends, family," said Chelsea Ray, an NCCU Class of 2005 alum.

This year's celebrations soared with Eagle Pride.

"People come from all over the country to Durham, North Carolina, every year to celebrate our homecoming," said NCCU senior Zion Tyson.

Quentin White graduated from NCCU in 2023. He said he's grateful for a safe and fun celebration for homecoming.

"It's amazing, man, being able to do something like this without any violence going on? It's perfect," he said.

The changes come after four people were injured in two separate shootings during homecoming weekend last year.

This year, the university announced several changes to prevent any violence.

Only faculty, staff, and students could park on campus for the festivities.

Plus, the university provided shuttle service to campus from downtown Durham and Durham Tech.

All music on campus ended at 6:30, and the campus closed down at 7.

ABC11 also saw a large number of law enforcement on campus from various agencies, and saw drones above the Post Game Social Saturday evening.

NCCU alum Lakeaya Lane said it provides an added sense of safety while celebrating.

"This area is about to be packed with people," she said. "Knowing that you're going to be safe and everybody can come and there's still a place where everybody can be."

NCCU senior Malcolm Reed agreed and had some advice for his fellow Eagles celebrating homecoming this weekend.

"Stay safe out there. Don't do nothing crazy. Don't do nothing your mom wouldn't approve," he said. "We'll see you next year!"
