Neighbors recall 'kind-hearted' mom killed in Fayetteville home fire

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities are investigating a deadly apartment fire in Fayetteville that killed a 35-year-old woman and critically injured a 1-year-old child.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m. Monday at the Kensington Place Apartments off Yadkin Road. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a second-floor unit and rushed to rescue two people inside, according to emergency officials.

The Cumberland County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Porsha Quarles, 35. A 1-year-old girl, identified by neighbors as Quarles' daughter, was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
