Suspect dies after break-in call turns into hours-long standoff

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A disturbance call Wednesday escalated into an hours-long armed standoff involving multiple law enforcement agencies and ended with the suspect's death the following day.

Goldsboro Police Department officers were dispatched at approximately 5:31 a.m. to the 1100 block of Shelley Drive for a reported breaking and entering in progress. While officers were en route, the situation intensified.

According to police, officers arrived to the sound of gunfire coming from inside the home. The 56-year-old female victim fled the home moments later. The suspect Alexander Jones, 52, of Goldsboro then fired toward both her and the responding officers. Officers returned fire, striking Jones.

Jones retreated back inside and barricaded himself, prompting officers to establish a perimeter and evacuate nearby homes. The victim was taken to UNC Health Wayne, where she remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Crisis negotiators attempted repeatedly to contact Jones but received no response. Emergency response teams from Wayne, Lenoir, Greene, and Johnston counties were called in to assist with the prolonged standoff.

Authorities deployed a range of specialized tools -- including drones, robotic devices, and tactical equipment -- in an effort to locate Jones and bring the situation under control. The Emergency Response Team also deployed gas into the home in an attempt to force compliance.

The Goldsboro Fire Department and Wayne County EMS remained on standby throughout the incident, with fire crews using a drone to support operations. A fire was later spotted inside the home. Additional fire units responded, but suppression efforts were temporarily paused until officers could confirm the suspect's location to ensure firefighter safety.

Jones did eventually surrender and exit the home. He was taken first to UNC Health Wayne and later to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

On Thursday, he died from his injuries.

The investigation remains active. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the officer-involved shooting and the cause of the fire, while the Goldsboro Police Department continues to investigate the attempted murder of the victim.
