RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Outreach Program for Soccer (TOPSoccer) fall season just kicked off in Wake County, a recreational soccer program for children with intellectual, emotional or physical disabilities.
The program pairs young athletes with buddies, creating a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants. Head coach Jeffrey Zany said it welcomes children with diverse abilities, like those with Down syndrome or autism, ensuring they can participate and thrive regardless of their challenges.
He also added that TOPSoccer can have such a huge impact on their development.
Zany has seen kids who were once shy and nonverbal gradually start speaking, saying a few words or sentences over the years. He said it's incredible to witness that growth. He has seen kids who struggled with walking become stronger and more capable, eventually able to shoot a ball into the goal, dribble, or run around with confidence.
Allison Bartell said she has seen this impact first hand from her boys, Lucas and Jude, who are both on the spectrum.
"A lot of teams and practices work a little too fast for our kids to be able to really participate meaningfully," she said. "So, this is a way that they get to each participate at their own speed. They have one-on-one interactions with their buddies, guiding them about how to interact... it's just a great opportunity for them to be able to play sports."
Lucas and Jude told Eyewitness News that their favorite part was scoring goals, all with help from 'buddies' like Alex, who has been playing soccer since she was young.
"I know that I'm helping them be able to feel like a normal kid and being able to be treated like they have never had to deal with, like, bullies or anything," Alex said.
TOPSoccer is a community built organization with NCFC Youth providing equipment and eventual jerseys, all in the name of inclusivity.
"And it's really rewarding being able to see that growth and development over the years between both the athlete in the program and the volunteer bodies," added Coach Zany
