Director Evan Atherton made the film in collaboration with the R2 Builders' Club, a global group of Star Wars fans who spend a lot of time crafting out some of the most authentic-looking recreations of the droid. Atheron also managed to recruit Lucasfilm effects artist Landis Fields, who took a break from The Force Awakens to help out with some of the more complicated effects.
Unveiled at the Sonoma Film Festival, the short captures the adorableness of R2 and his complex emotions only communicated through beeps and whistles. While R2's affections go unrequited with the mail box, there is still love waiting for him in the end.
