NORTH CAROLINA (WTVD) -- Eastern North Carolina is struggling to dry out after receiving up to 10 inches of rain since Monday.
Among the hardest hit were Chowan County and Bertie County. Pictures show roads that were completely washed out and cars that were submerged in rising water.
The dangerous driving conditions forced Edenton-Chowan Schools to close for the day.
So far, the National Weather Service reports more than 10 inches of rain fell in Chowan County. At least 9 and a half inches have fallen in Bertie County. Knotts Island, in Currituck County, received 9 inches of rain in the last two days. Virginia Beach has received more than a foot of rain.
