Police: Man found dead accidentally stabbed himself

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Raleigh police say a man found dead on the side of the road last week accidentally stabbed himself with a knife.

The body of a 50-year-old Ausencio Leal Velasquez was found along the 3800 block of South Wilmington Street at Tryon Road on the morning of Aug. 13.

An autopsy showed that Velasquez fell or slumped backward to the ground and a large, unsheathed knife in a tote bag strapped over his shoulder was forced upward, stabbing him under his left arm.

Police say the fatal wound appeared to have been sustained accidentally, and they do not suspect foul play.
