Answer to I-540 congestion may be stop-and-go lights
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- If the highways are the arteries, traffic congestion is the cholesterol - blockages aren't healthy for anyone.
A new project, however, hopes to alleviate some of the pain for drivers traveling on I-540 in North Raleigh: stop-and-go signals located on entrance ramps.
"Technology plays a role because we use sensors in the pavement," NC DOT engineer Joey Hopkins explained to ABC11. "They tell us what the traffic is doing."
The $2.1 million project will install ramp signals at four entrance ramps to I-540 West: Falls of Neuse Road, Six Forks Road, Creedmoor Road and Leesville Road.
"After we do these and learn how they work and see their success, we'll do more of these in the Triangle," Hopkins added.
NC DOT officials told ABC11 that construction could start as early as the end of October and last less than a year.
