The North Carolina Tar Heel football team ranked as the No. 22 team in the Associated Press preseason Top 25, amid some quarterback controversy.

North Carolina's backup quarterback position was in a state of uncertainty leading up to the poll's release, the News and Observer reported. Caleb Henderson, a redshirt sophomore, announced he was transferring, leaving redshirt freshman Nathan Elliott as the Tar Heels' No. 2 quarterback.

The N&O reported Henderson's departure leaves UNC with four scholarship quarterbacks: Mitch Trubisky (the starter), Elliott and freshmen Logan Byrd and Chazz Surratt. Trubisky is the only one with any college game experience.

In a way, the 2016 season will pick up where 2015 left off: Alabama is No. 1 and Clemson is 2.

The defending national champion Crimson Tide is the No. 1 team in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the fifth time overall and third time under coach Nick Saban.
