Downed tree takes out Raleigh power lines
RALEIGH -- Several people in Raleigh were without power for most of the day after a tree took down some power lines Thursday morning.
Residents near Dixie Trail said it was the last thing they thought would happen today.
"It wasn't storming, there was no thunder, so we didn't expect this," one neighbor said. "I woke up without the electricity; the power was out."
A tree fell on the power lines around 6 a.m., snapping four power poles and leaving at least 1,200 customers without power.
"I heard the boom and then went out to see what happened," resident George Boyles said. "I was watching TV and then all of a sudden, the TV went out. Just really strange the way it happened .. it could have snapped .. and come to the house, but it didn't touch the house at all, so that's good."
Dixie Trail between Wade Avenue and Churchill Road was closed as crews work to repair the damage.

Duke Energy Progress crews worked on the power poles for hours hoping to get power back to residents before the sweltering heat caused any problems.
Some residents told ABC11 that they had to leave their homes due to the heat, or lack of power.
