Snow before New Hampshire primary could deter voters
Snow is expected to move into the state of New Hampshire Monday night, just hours before the nation's first primary.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of New Hampshire through 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. Snow totals could range from an inch in the northern part of the state to 6 inches near Portsmouth.
Although most of the accumulation will be over by Tuesday morning, the impact messy roads could have on voting turnout is a concern. Temperatures will fall to the teens Monday night before rising to the 20s on Tuesday. The cold temperatures will support refreezing on many roads, bridges, and overpasses.
According to a study by Accuweather meteorologist Tim Loftus, cold temperatures actually deter voters from voting more than snow or ice. This study also found that women are more easily impacted by extreme cold than men. Extreme cold can affect voter turnout. Luckily, high temperatures on Tuesday will likely only be 5 to 10 degrees below normal.
