RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A weak cold front approaching from the west may trigger a shower or two after midnight tonight. Any rain will be minimal. A shower or two lingers in a few spots tomorrow morning, but tomorrow will generally be another warm day with some sunshine.
A secondary push of drier and cooler air will settle south into the Carolinas Wednesday holding afternoon temperatures closer to the the historical average high of 60. No major travel problems are expected anywhere in the east Wednesday.
Thursday will be another story but travel is typically lighter overall, Thanksgiving Day. A storm will form in the mid-Mississippi Valley Wednesday night and slide east across southern Virginia Thanksgiving Day. This will give us a wet day Thanksgiving with afternoon highs in the middle 60s. There may be just enough instability Thursday to bring us a thunderstorm or two, but regardless, some of the rain Thursday into early Thursday night will be heavy with an inch of rain possible in parts of the area. There are still some differences among the models as to the final rain totals but at least half an inch seems likely in most areas.
The Thanksgiving Day rain lasts into early Thursday night, then the rain will taper off and end after midnight.
By Friday, dry weather is once again expected as Thursday's storm moves off the east coast. Highs will drop back to the mid 50s. Likely the coolest air of the season will continue to usher in this weekend, as northwest flow continues. Highs will continue dropping, reaching the mid 40s by Sunday, some 10-15 degrees below historical average. Overnight lows will also drop significantly, with many places of the Triangle dropping below freezing each morning, even into the mid 20s with radiational cooling. Although chilly weather is expected, we remain dry through the weekend and into early next week.
Have a great evening!
