Wegmans wants to come to Cary
Grocery store chain Wegmans may come to Cary

Wegmans has its eye on the Triangle as the grocery chain expands; the company is hoping to open a store in Cary.

Wegmans is interested in building across from the Cary Towne Center on Cary Towne Boulevard. There is a 90-acre parcel of land and Wegmans would take a piece of the property.

"We have signed a letter of intent and are working through lease negotiations with Columbia Development Group, with hopes of reaching a final lease agreement sometime during the first quarter of 2016," said Wegmans Vice President of Media Relations Jo Natale.

On Wednesday, Cary surveyors assessed the property and the land.

Many who have shopped at a Wegmans and meandered around the open-air market are thrilled at the prospect.

"I'm very excited that it's coming here," said Apex resident Alison Scott. "I'm looking forward to the baked goods, a lot of custom ordering."

"I have a gluten-free child, so the gluten-free pastries that they have there are just not accessible in this marketplace," said Raleigh resident Ron Bergen.

The grocer would not say how soon they would like to open.

Some people feel a Wegmans could do wonders for revitalizing the Cary Towne Center. The Sears has already closed. Another anchor store, Macy's, is getting ready to shut its doors. All of the inventory is being cleared out of the store right now.

"I am upset about it. I am depressed about it. I don't know what's going to happen there," said Cary resident Johnnie Johnson.

Wegmans would join Publix as the newest chain in the Triangle, and would likely up the ante in the grocery wars.

"Bring it on, yeah," said Johnson. "The more the better."

The City of Cary says the developer has come to the council with a rough draft of plans, but has not submitted an official application. Once that happens, the City Council will determine public hearings on the proposal.
