WENDELL (WTVD) -- A Wake County mom remains under the watchful care of doctors after being shot multiple times at a family gathering. Destiny Davis, 21, was cradling her infant in her arms and shielding the boy from bullets when gunfire erupted.

The shooting happened Friday evening in the 3300 block of Alfreda Court in Wendell.

A number of family members called 911.

"Someone shot through the house," one caller said.

Another told the dispatcher, "He just came and shot through the window."

Eyewitnesses said Kevin Watkins became agitated during the gathering, started yelling at children, left and came back with a gun.

Luckily, the baby was not hurt.

Davis, however, is at WakeMed Hospital. A friend told ABC11 that she is in ICU and has a bullet lodged in her lung.

Wake County Sheriff's deputies were back at the home Monday afternoon and were seen talking to witnesses.

Meanwhile, the shooting suspect went before a judge. Watkins questioned why his mom wasn't there and didn't hire an attorney.

"My mom says she was going to hire one," he said in court. "I don't know if she did already. I don't know what she's dealing with."

He is facing a couple of felony charges now and was heard sighing as he left the courtroom.

Watkins is being held at the Wake County Detention Center on $500,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for July 18.
