WakeMed doctor makes rap parodies to promote good health
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Raleigh doctor from WakeMed is putting a new spin on promoting good health practices by trying to reach patients and their families through rap parodies.
Dr. Ivy Pointer works at the pediatric intensive care unit, but outside of her work she has another identity, Young I.V.
"It really just started out as a fun hobby, I did a few videos with the hospital kind of to promote morale," she said.
From there she decided to try rapping about various health topics with songs like "Croup, there it is" and "Viral Funk."
"At this point I kind of see it as an effective tool for educating other families and patients," she explained.
The topics range anywhere from the importance of car seats to warning against the overuse of antibiotics. While the idea and the persona are her own, she says she makes sure all videos are in line with what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends.
Dr. Pointer said her rapping is more of a fun hobby than a second career. While her kids get a kick out of it, she says it took her husband a little longer to get on board.
"I think my husband initially thought I was a little wacko and that this was a midlife crisis," she said.
But now he helps with the videotaping and even her colleagues have helped out as backup dancers and vocalists.
