Saturday evening investigators charged Luis Vargas, 17, with murder. He was placed in Durham County Jail without bond.
Investigators said Vargas and Perez were acquaintances.
Durham police investigate homicide
DURHAM Officers were dispatched to a possible gunshot wound call at approximately 1:25 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived they found a man lying in the parking lot at #9 Welch Place. The man, identified as Joel Perez, 22, had been shot in the head. Perez was transported to Duke University Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
